Well Elisa was baptized yesterday. Next Sunday I get to do the confirmation. We are working with the entire family. Elisa is the third one and the cousin of the first to be baptised. The spouse and parents of the first one Jessica are who we are working with now. They are actually from Peru.
Otherwise this last week was difficult. Because it was Christmas everyone had parties and we lost around 30 appointments because people weren't there or wanted us to come back later. We also went tracting, but one day we went to 30 or so houses and only 3 people answered and they all were "too busy" to have us ever come by. The rest were the same but generally more answered. This week doesn't look like it is going to be any better. Possibly worse for contacting people. The end of the year, everyone is going to be at parties. All we can do is work like we are.
I'm sending some pictures today as well. I love all of you and hope you are having fun in your break. Missionaries don't get breaks :).

Well things have been going well. I am having a great time. It is already 9 here so I am supposed to be in the house already but the Mission President gave us permision because we had an activity with the whole mission. We split up into 9 teams of 11 and played a round of soccer, every team played every other team at least once. I ended up on two teams somehow and played twice as many games as everyone else. Each game lasted ten minutes or so. So I played for about 150 minutes or so, not straight through but that is still a ton. Needless to say I am tired. We then had each zone do a choral number and then we had dinner. It was fun but tiring.
As for the work, well right now we have one baptism scheduled for Sunday. Otherwise we are still making contacts and starting teaching and working with the members. It is lots of hard work but it pays off in the end. Well I will talk with soon and I hope everyone is doing well.

My first few days have been great. It is a lot of hard work but it is fun. My companion is Elder Cortez from Mexico. He only speaks Spanish so it is rather difficult at times. We are the only two in our area. My Spanish is coming along much faster now that it is just about all I hear and see.
The city is interesting. There are stray dogs everywhere and about half the houses here have pets, mostly dogs. There is a lot of barking always. The houses are all small as well and everything is very dirty. Almost everyone has television still though with DVD players and stuff. Their lives are much more simple. The people here are very nice and feed you every time. Yesterday I had two full lunches. It is a lot of food.
I actually was almost unable to write an email or call till January. The Mission President gave us permision yesterday to do this today. Apparently some missionaries had been using facebook and stuff so the Mission President said no more internet for anyone and I guess some others had also been calling home so he said the same thing about calling home.
I love it here. I already understand why return missionaries say it is almost more difficult to leave than to come. I am excited to be in the work. There truly is no greater work on earth. I love all of you and hope everything is going well.

I leave on Monday! It's exciting and I am having to focus on staying focused on studying here. The plane flights are very long though. I leave the MTC at 10:00 in the morning on Monday and get to Chile at 8:40 in the morning on Tuesday. I am counting on email being available in Chile and hopefully will be able to use that instead of letters because that will be expensive and take a long time. I love all of you and hope everything is going well.

Letter of December 2, 2008
Dear Family,
I tis great to hear from all of you and how things are going. I know you probably would like to know more but honestly not much of real import happens here. Thus, I usually don't have much to write but what is on my mind and my testimony. My days here are spent learning doctrine, Spanish, and leadership skills through the Spirit. Every day I learn to understand the spirit better. It is almost as if, really is, I was fasting from the spirit before.
Don't get me wrong with what I mean by not much of real import happens here. Important things happen every day, usually it is just personal revelation and understanding though. Every one of you that comes through here will love it; it is awesome. The only thing is you will want to get out of here at the same time to get on with your missions and real life. I have learned so much here and I know you will too.
One of my previous letters talked about how insignificant the vain things of the world are. However, this doesn't mean we shouldn't care about them. The Savior said, "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much... If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?" (Luke 16:10-11) Having to take care of things that are wholly unimportant in and of themselves are made important so that we can prove our faithfulness and desire to do all of God's will. We still must be in the world for our trials to prove us, but we don't have to be of the world and seek the unrighteous mammon. Therein lies the difference. Never has God given His children a law that was temporal, all things are given unto us for our spiritual benefit. It is the natural man that creates temporal things of the spiritual, for the natural man is temporal. If we are faithful in all things we are given and use them for our eternal and spiritual benefit, and not seek after more of the temporal than what we have for ourselves, we will inherit much more of that which is purely spiritual. It is the same concept as the Word of Wisdom, be faithful in taking care of this temporal body, that is the temple of the Holy Ghost, and you will be blessed with "great treasures of knowledge."
Remember that blessings will only come from obedience to the law upon which they are predicated. I promise all of youthat when we are exactly obedient to the commandments and also counsels of the scriptures and our priesthood teachers as well as our parents, you will be blessed. As long as your leaders do not tell you to sin, do what they say, even if you know they are wrong or not doing something right, or effectively to get something done. Ammon made this promise to King Lamoni, that whatsoever the king desired of him which was right, he would do. Ammon became a servant unto a wicked Lamanite king and made this promise. But because of his willingness to obey even a wicked ruler, he was blessed exceedingly, even with the coming of thousands into the Church of God.
I know that when we are exactly obedient, even when there is no real apparent need, we will be blessed without measure.

Letter of Thanksgiving Day 2008
Dear Family,
As today was Thanksgiving we were allowed to write to our families. I would really just like to say how very thankful I am for all of you and your support of me. I would like thank mom and dad for teaching me and rearing me and staying faithful to their covenants. Most of all I want to show my gratitude for my Savior and His infinite and divine love for me and each of you. He placed us all together as an eternal family in His wisdom, and gave us the immense blessing of being reared in the gospel. What joy and peace has come to each of us because we have a gospel-centered home. Love and cherish the memories and opportunities we have had together. For this life is short and only gets shorter. This life has no second chances to relive a part of your life. Make the most of it now. And because of the Only Begotten, what mistakes and regrets we have about our past can be and will be washed away when you trust in the Him who is mighty to save. I love each and every one of you and I know that He loves you. I know my Savior will take care of you and bless you, and that no matter what happens in this world we are an eternal family. We can never be truly separated when we build on the rock of our Redeemer. This I know in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Letter to Primary November 25, 2008
[to the Kirkland Fourth Ward Primary Children]
Dear Primary,
How are all of you? I am doing great and having an amazing time. I want all of you to know I really enjoyed being with you and getting to teach you. The gospel and Jesus Christ are very important to me. And having the pleasure of helping you feel that was a joy for me. I love little children and whenever I think of all of you I think of when Christ blessed children and said that they are who the Kingdom of God is made of. He loved them and loves you just as much. You all are and example to me of how to have a humble and willing heart and a sincere desire to learn and be like Christ. I look up to you and love each and every one of you. Thank you for your examples to me.
Your friend, Elder David Skiles

Dear Family,
Things are going great. I am thoroughly enjoying the presence of the spirit here. Things are doing better with my district but otherwise it's much of the same. The Lord really knows exactly what we need to be prepared. Thanksgiving here is very different from a normal day. We don't have classes but we have service, a large lunch and also a devotional and fireside. I'm sure it's going to be a great day.
As for how my language is coming, it is coming along well but I still have a significant amount to learn. I know enough to communicate and share the gospel but I don't have the command I would like to simply and profoundly teach in the language. I learn more every day though.
Not much really happens in the MTC really. Most days are the same and mostly I just have learning experiences all the time that are not very big. Still, some good things did happen this week. I had a lot of success last week in the RC, the referral center. That is where you make and take phone calss about the Church videos and books and things. I had three people accept the missionaries as the means to receive the item. I was very happy needless to say.
Well, I love all of you and thank you so much for all you have done for me. I can feel the strength of your prayers for me and am very grateful. And I know the Lord loves you too.

Dear Family,
I feel your love and prayers of faith and am grateful. I know that I will have success and joy regardless of my trials because of your prayers and faith for me.
I am really coming to love the scriptures and their stories. The more I read the more I understand. We are much more than we can comprehend.
Things are going very well. My command of the language is increasing daily as is my knowledge of how and what to teach. I taught many times in Spanish already. We have a building where volunteers come to be taught and we are given specific scenarios. We have our time there on Friday, so we rarely, I think maybe once, we have had enough volunteers. This last Friday three volunteers came in late and we, my companion, the sister in our district and I, were asked to teach them. Two of them were there for a Spanish class, but the third one was visiting a friend and wasn't a member. It was a long but good lesson I felt. We did the lesson in both Spanish and English for the non-member investigator's sake. Our teacher stayed in the room with us most of the time and actually pitched in a bit. The reason I bring this up is because at the very moment I began to just bear my own personal testimony, the Spirit entered the room with force and I could see it work in them. I could see their countenances and behavior change. I am so grateful to have been able to see that, to see a seed be planted in someone's heart and begin to take root. I do not know has happened since and am not sure I ever will know, but I am grateful.
We are eternal, as a family we have no end. We are who we take with us after death.

Letter of November 11, 2008
Dear Family,
First of all I am feeling much better. Thursday last week I went to the doctor again and he prescribed stronger anti-cough and decongestant. Of course, the next day I reacted and have had the hives ever since but I no longer am as congested and such. I'm not taking the medication still either.
We got two new roommates, my companion and I. The two elders that were with us before moved to another room because two other elders in our district left for the Guatemala MTC last week. The two new elders aren't in our district but are in our branch. They are good, strong young men. One of them is the only non-native speaker in his destrict. It's an advanced class so they will still be gone before me even though this was their first week.
As for my own district, things are going OK. There are a few problems, mostly that it isn't very unified. Sometimes even in the church we have to take a step back and remember we are all children of God and the only difference between us all is our choices. Pride is so extremely destructive and often difficult to catch. Last night one of our teachers in an attempt to combat the disunity gave an excellent lesson on humility. I loved it and it was very edifying. However, the teacher came to my companion who is the district leader and said that she didn't think everyone really got the message. I could already tell that at least one really hadn't. She wants my comp. to give another lesson if necessary. I sincerely hope it doesn't have to be. But I think that perhaps the Lord is having us go through some specific training right now that requires it.
What I really want to say is beware, beware the awful pitfall of price. Pride destroyed the Nephites, the Jaredites, and many other nations. Pride is the universal sin. It was pride that caused Lucifer to fall. Pride is the great destroyer. President Benson gave a great talk in the April 1989 General Conference called "Beware of Pride." He expertly describes what it is and how to overcome it.
One key priciple of humility that we discussed last night was reverence. When you are reverent you are humble. Reverence is much more than just being quiet, it is having a love for your Heavenly Father and an understanding of what He has done for you. When you have this you will submit to His will and know that all things are possible through Him.
Well I probably should say a few things about me, though my letters show what is happening to me I'm sure. I am happy and grateful to be here. Basically all I feel right now is joy and gratitude for my Savior and a desire to do His will. He is everything for me, I love Him so much. I love all of you as well, very much. I remember and pray for you always.

Letter of November 4, 2008
Dear Family,
I guess I have somewhat to say about enduring trials. The last week I have been very sick. For four or five days, I was running a fever that reached over 100 degrees F. at times. I have also been severely congested and have had a very sore throat, sore enough that I could hardly drink water. I have received a blessing but I still haven’t overcome it. I have had a bad cough the last few days and am still congested. I went to the doctor twice and all both of them said was I should keep drinking water and take a decongestant. They don’t know what it is, but it isn’t strep. Anyway, as you can imagine, it has been a trial. I have not missed any days and the Lord has been kind enough that at certain times I can be free from discomfort so I can completely focus. There have been times where I have felt that the Lord has let me alone to struggle, to show integrity and do the work even when by the standards of the MTC I could stay in bed and sleep. What I am really trying to say is there may come times when you feel you are drowning, and the Lord won’t save you right then. You may swim in the darkness with seemingly no end in sight. The very gates of hell might gape open to try and receive you, and you may not feel the hand of the Lord even then. But this I promise you. If you still put your trust in God and do all you can to serve Him even when no blessings come, you will be blessed without measure in the end.
The Lord will not abandon you. The rewards for enduring these most suffocating and difficult trials are blessings an hundred fold of the blessings you had before. Every path and trial and loss you may face in this life if borne well, never doubting always trusting, will bring blessings of joy beyond your comprehension. Bear with patience thine afflictions, and you will be blessed without measure. And remember, the Savior suffered every pain and sorrow for every soul to ever walk on this earth, and every one that will. And also remember the trials of the prophets of God and all His saints. I suggest that you all as a family read these scriptures: Job (if you have time, all of it), Joseph Smith History, 2 Nephi 4, and Mosiah 18 ( I think, it’s Ammon’s excitement about his mission). I have taken heart to these scriptures because of their stories of faith and integrity. I got to watch the new Joseph Smith movie on Sunday, and I realize that I never fully comprehended the scope of the difficulties Joseph faced. Only two men I can think of suffered as much or more than he, Christ obviously and Job.
Well on a little lighter note, it snowed today as you probably already know. I got to talk with Justin for a long time as well. I have much if not most of every day to just study. It’s the School of the Prophets here. So every day is like Sunday. The only real difference is Sunday we actually have Sacrament and different meetings. Things are going great and I hope everything is going well for you.

Letter of October 28, 2008
Dear Family,
I have been having a great time. Yesterday, however, can be described in one instance. I was walking back to my dorm room at 9:35pm having just finished the day and got distracted by something behind me. I kept looking behind me staring off into space, and the next thing I know I run straight into a pole. I had some pent up frustration in me so I started hitting the pole till I didn’t feel angry anymore. As I was changing, all I could say is “I have a hard head”. My head didn’t hurt and it still doesn’t even though I have a good sized lump on my head. I’m not sure I will ever forget the A-flat ping the pole made as it woke up my mind fully for the first time in a few days.
I have been fighting feeling sick the last few days. It hasn’t hindered me but it still isn’t easy. It really isn’t anything new. Yet I am grateful because it helps keep me humble and focused. I have really taken a love to scriptures and prayer because of it. I know I am entitled to healing by the priesthood, but I would rather live with it for my whole life than let my pride gain any ground. In reality, I have really cursed myself to always have physical problems. I asked to be humble. I asked the Lord to humble me in any and every way so that I can best serve Him. I am grateful for the trials I face and will gladly face more. Like the sons of Mosiah, I will bear with patience mine afflictions that perhaps I might bring one soul unto repentance (read Mosiah 26, it has become one of my favorite chapters).
Learn to apply the scriptures, not just understand the principles but learn how the prophets and missionaries in the Book of Mormon acted, what they did, what they thought. Follow their examples and be who you think they were. Try and just be who you think and feel Christ is exercising faith and you will find Him in yourself. You will begin to see Him everywhere, especially in your own eyes. You will find your very being will begin to be filled with a flame that will burn in your heart always, and the spirit will be ever present. Don’t ask why, don’t question, just do. “IrĂ© y HarĂ©”. “I will go and I will do,” like Nephi. The Lord has a might work for each and every one of you to do. Let Him prepare you. I trusted in Him and let Him do His work in me. Let my heart change, and that was sufficient.
Things are about to get bad. The toughest times this world has ever seen are around the corner, they are here. The wrath of the almighty God is coming down on the children of men. The Lord’s arm is almost laid bare. Hold fast to the rod. Hold it with all your might, for it will save your life, as it has mine.

Letter of October 21, 2008
Dear Family,
The MTC is not really what I expected. The spirit here is akin to the temple. I can feel the spirit at all times in all places. We are given power to learn and study we didn't have before. Time seems to have been slowed down to increase the amount of knowledge we can take in. It feels as if I have been here for months. Yet I haven't even been here a full week yet. Time doesn't seem to go slow though. Let me just say this, in the MTC time really doesn't exist. This really is a place for the Lord's Priesthood army to assemble and learn.
The power of the spirit is intense. To listen to hundreds of missionaries sing with the spirit is an unequaled experience. In a week I feel I have grown more than the last few years. We as elders are a rock that has been cut out of the mountain without hands. We are an unstoppable power. All of us are numbered among the noble and great ones. That I know for a surity. By all of us I mean everyone in the Church and many in the rest of the world. This is not my doctrine, it is one of the things I have learned here.
Do not doubt yourself. You all are the greatest spirits to ever walk this earth. Your potential is huge. Any one of you could be the means of bringing entire nations unto Christ. Never underestimate your ability. Abanadi though he brought one soul unto Christ, that one soul was the reason and lineage of the next half of the Book of Mormon. Alma brought hundreds into the gospel and was the father of Alma the Younger, who was the father of Helaman, who was the father of Helaman, who was the father of Nephi, the father of Nephi the Apostle. Knowing this and what each of these prophets did, Abinadi's diligence and faith eventually led to the salvation of millions of souls. He brought one soul unto Christ during his ministry, but his example, diligence and faith are everlasting.
I urge you to even now let everyone you know who you know you are and who is your Protector, Savior and Redeemer. You have the most important message on this earth. The Gospel is the most important thing there is other than your family. The knowledge and truth you have is what men have fought, lived and died for for many hundreds of years. What you have to say may very well be the words that eventually bring some soul or many souls eternal incomprehensible joy. You could literally save a life. For that is what I am doing, saving spiritual lives even as they are dying from an eternal death. Like the sons of Mosiah, I can't bear the thought that any soul should perish (Mosiah 28:3). I love you all very much.
Love,
Elder Skiles

First Letter from the MTC
Letter dated 10/15/08 (the day Elder Skiles entered the MTC)
Dear Family,
Well I'm here. The MTC is a well oiled machine that runs smoothly and effectively. They have a very strict system. I was moved into the intermediate class and so should be leaving in 8 weeks instead of 3. My companion is Elder J----s, who is the district leader as well. Every week we are required to prepare a talk on a given subject, and two people will be called on in the meeting to give their talk in Spanish. We have one sister in our district as well. This is a new experience. I am glad to be here. It is truly the work of God going forth among the children of men.
The Lord sends us imperfect young men to do this most important work so that He may build us up into the very leaders that He needs to send our sons and daughters in the world to proclaim His message of joy and happiness. I love each and every one of you and ask that every one of you, including Mom and Dad, become more missionary-minded everyday.
Love, David Skiles

Elder Skiles enters the MTC
Elder David Skiles entered the MTC today in Provo, Utah at 1 pm.
We, mom and dad, and Sister, Carlene, all went to the training center to see him off.

Putting on the badge.
There were approximately 400 missionaries who entered the MTC in Provo today. Both the MTC president, his wife, and one of his counselors spoke to all of us. After the meeting, all of the missionaries filed out through the back of the room. Obviously, it was a very tender moment for all of us.
Interesting facts: The church maintains 300 dairy cows specifically to provide the milk needs of the MTC--about 400 gallons of milk a day. The missionaries at the MTC go through about 1.2 tons of cereal each year. There are about 2,200 missionaries in the MTC at any given time.

Setting Apart as a full-time missionary
David was set apart this evening by President D. Jeffrey Burnham, president of the Kirkland Washington Stake. His father, grandfather Weight, and Bishop John Farmer stood in the circle. Now that he is set apart, we will refer to him as 'Elder Skiles' from now on. Elder Skiles was set apart in his home with his family present.
Some thoughts from his blessing:
He was set apart as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and assigned to serve in the Chile Santiago East Mission. He was blessed with the gift of knowledge and the gift of healing. He was blessed that he would learn to love their culture and their language. He was blessed that he would be able to speak the language clearly. He was blessed with a deep testimony of the gospel and a knowledge and understanding of the Atonement and be able to teach it to the people of Chile.
He was admonished to get up and go to work every day--even when sick. However, he was blessed that no bug would harm him, but would pass through his body quickly.

David's Farewell Sacrament Meeting
David's farewell Sacrament Meeting was held today. Except for Carlene, David's immediate family was all there. Also in attendance were his Grandma and Grandpa Skiles, his Grandma and Grandpa Weight, his Aunt Michelle and Uncle Brett, his cousins Camille and Gabe, and his good friend Theo Squires.
Marc, Tammy, and David all spoke on the subject of 'Watchmen on the Tower'. Janai and Marc sang "Be Still My Soul" and the ward choir sang "Come, Come Ye Saints".
Some thoughts from David's talk:
"I have had many watchmen on the tower. In many ways, we are all watchmen on the tower. We can be protected and uplifted by them. We canchoose to listen and heed their counsel or to ignore them. Abinadi and King Noah are great examples of how this works. King Noah and his priests murdered Abinadi and later were killed by fire and disease. Alma listened to Abinadi and later brought many to the truth. We need to heed the counsel and guidance of the Holy Ghost. Always remember the Savior. He will guide us away from the evils of the world."
